Akronyme sind Abkürzungen die aus den Anfangsbuchstaben der beteiligen Worte bestehen. Akronyme entstanden aus dem Wunsch, Tippaufwand zu minimieren. Sie spielen im privaten, internationalen E-Mail-Verkehr - mehr aber noch bei Internet-Chats - eine wichtige Rolle. Die überwiegende Anzahl der Akronyme ist englischsprachig.

Manche Akronyme werden sehr häufig, andere wiederum kaum verwendet. Viele Akronyme sind Insider-Slang bestimmter Gruppen (beispielsweise Programmierer, Hacker, etc.). Im geschäftlichen E-Mail-Verkehr sollte man auf Akronyme möglichst verzichten, da man sich nie sicher sein kann, ob der Empfänger diese auch kennt. Es gibt jedoch durchaus Berufsgruppen, in denen Abkürzungen eine wichtige Rolle spielen und die Kommunikationspartner stärker aneinanderbinden.
